Science in the Spotlight: Forecasting wildfire behavior

Amid the recent outbreak of wildfires across the United States, the issue is at the top of mind for many. Wildfires have major impacts on society, including loss of lives, destruction of property, increased levels of smoke that affects our health, and economic damage.
In this second Explorer Series Conversation on Wildfire, NSF NCAR scientist Jason Knievel will share highlights from recent advancements in the Research Application Laboratory on predicting and modeling fire behavior, and how this research helps firefighters, local authorities, and resource managers direct their efforts.
Jason Knievel
Jason Knievel is a meteorologist and scientific program manager in NSF NCAR's Research Applications Laboratory. Over three decades of basic and applied research, he has led projects with total funding in excess of $70 million and written articles and book chapters on a range of topics, including mesoscale and microscale meteorology over complex terrain and land surfaces; urban meteorology; moist convection and its effects, including convective vortices, density currents, and gravity waves; tropical cyclones; wildfires; ensembles and probabilistic prediction; weather and decision-making; model verification; the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model; Cloud Model 1 (CM1); technology transfer; and field campaigns.
