NSF NCAR brings students, experts, research infrastructure, and cutting-edge science into one place to train and inspire anyone interested in working in or engaging with the Earth system sciences.
NSF NCAR Education, Engagement & Early-Career Development (EdEC) leads the education mission of NSF NCAR by engaging, training, and providing educational development opportunities for the next generation of scientists and engineers, the broader Earth system science community, and the general public. We prepare students and early-career scientists for careers to work in cutting-edge fields such as severe weather observation and modeling, space weather prediction, and new technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Next-Generation Workforce
Our programs for undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows train the next generation of scientists and engineers with the knowledge and skills needed for careers in the sciences to address exciting atmospheric science projects.
Early-Career
We provide professional development and technical training to support the career growth of early-career staff at NSF NCAR and UCAR.
Faculty
Learn how EdEC collaborates with the university community by training mentors, providing teaching tools, and funding faculty to do research with NSF NCAR.
Public
Our educators inspire, engage, and inform the public about the atmospheric and Earth system sciences conducted by NSF NCAR and the university community, ensuring a broad understanding of these critical areas.
Education & Engagement in NSF NCAR Labs
Many NSF NCAR labs sponsor their own efforts to inspire students and the public through the insights their scientists are gaining.
The Computational & Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) creates public exhibits at the NSF NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center, and runs a summer internship.
Computational & Information Systems Laboratory
The Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL) runs a variety of activities, including online resources and open houses for local communities during field campaigns.
The High Altitude Observatory (HAO) maintains resources about our Sun and important solar scientists.
Education & Training at UCAR
UCAR's community programs offer a variety of education and training opportunities for K-12 teachers and students, undergraduate and graduate students, and professionals.
