Call for Proposals - ASP Summer Colloquium

Deadline May 31, 2025

NSF NCAR Education, Engagement, and Early-Career Development (EdEC) and the Advanced Study Program (ASP), invite proposals from NSF NCAR staff for the 2026 ASP Summer Colloquium.

ASP organizes summer colloquia aimed at U.S. graduate students that focus on emerging or rapidly evolving research areas where comprehensive course materials may not yet exist. These colloquia are a partnership with the U.S. university community and are designed to complement, not replace, existing coursework. Proposed topics should align with the scientific and technical priorities of NSF NCAR and its U.S. university partners. To explore past topics, please visit Previous ASP Colloquia.

The colloquium is an in-person, two-week event in Boulder, bringing together graduate students, and lecturers from NSF NCAR, universities, research labs, and the private sector. The training fosters a dynamic environment with a blend of lectures, tutorials, and group work. ASP will support meeting costs for approximately 25 students and up to 10 external lecturers from U.S. institutions. ASP can not cover staff time.

Typically, the colloquium organizers are NSF NCAR staff, in partnership with external colleagues. ASP staff will assist with organizing the event, including recruitment, selection, logistics, pedagogy, and evaluation.

Proposal Requirements: Your proposal should be 2-3 pages in length and include the following:

List of Organizers: Identify the key organizers and their roles.

Scientific Focus: Provide a description of the proposed topic and its relevance to current research.

Justification: Explain why this topic is timely and important for the community.

Colloquium Structure: Outline the structure of the colloquium, including lecture formats, group work, and any planned tutorials. A detailed agenda is not required at this stage. To see an agenda from a previous colloquium, please contact Scott Briggs.

HPC Resources: The ASP has very limited resources for supercomputing and data storage available for the colloquium. If your proposal requires support for these, please provide a plan for the support and use of computing resources.

Please note that the colloquium is intended to be a standalone event and cannot exceed two weeks in duration unless supported by additional lab sponsorship.

Scheduling Information: The ASP Colloquium is scheduled for July 13 - 24, 2026. The schedule is driven by available meeting rooms and unfortunately can’t be modified.

Submission Instructions: Please submit your proposal to Scott Briggs at sbriggs@ucar.edu. For additional questions or further details, please contact Scott or Rebecca Haacker.
